COVID 19 UPDPATE
Following the latest announcement from the Government that most restrictions have been lifted, we are really looking forward to welcoming back our clients to face to face therapy. At The Retreat we are only too aware of the multitude of pressures the current situation is putting on everyone and we are dedicated and determined to continue to support our clients in the best way that we possibly can. Our measures to ensure a covid secure venue for clients and our staff include:
- Although face coverings are no longer mandatory, we recommend you discuss this with your therapist to ensure you are both relaxed and comfortable during your session
- We continue to ensure our premises are well ventilated and thoroughly cleaned
- We continue to provide hand sanitizer throughout all our buildings
- We continue to provide face masks should you wish to wear one

What is couple therapy?
Couple relationships impact our wellbeing, our children’s mental health and development and how we engage with others in our community. Couple therapy can cover many common problems and may involve talking openly about subjects such as sexuality. People in one-on-one sessions may focus on exploring their sexuality, relationships, marriage and other aspects that can be helped using relationship therapy. They may also discuss concerns related to intimacy with a partner or sexual thoughts that cause distress.
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
There are many types of therapy, CBT being one of them. CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment. It uses a practical approach to problem-solving and takes a hands-on approach. Its aim is to help you to change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are behind your difficulties. Eventually changing the way you feel.
Which conditions can therapy be used to treat?
Our skilled counsellors, psychologists and therapists will listen to you in a non-judgemental way in a private, confidential setting. They can help you with your current difficulties, past experiences or anxieties about your future with the aim of helping you improve the quality of your life and relationships. You may be anxious, depressed, have a low mood or even have suicidal thoughts. These can all be helped by therapy. Your mental health can be dramatically improved by psychotherapy and counselling.
What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)?
EMDR is a form of psychotherapy in which you will be asked to recall distressing images. The therapist then directs you in a type of bilateral sensory input, such as side-to-side eye movements or hand tapping. This therapy can be offered online or in person with one of our highly trained therapists. EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and effects of trauma. EMDR has also been found to help with other disorders such as anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and panic disorder.
What is group therapy?
We offer two kinds of group therapy.
Group Psychotherapy is a longer term therapy, providing a safe space so that people can talk about their difficulties. This increases self-understanding and improves relationships with others. Being able to express difficult thoughts and feelings makes them feel less overwhelming and in time, more manageable. It can help when you feel depressed or anxious, or lack self-confidence.
Compassion Focused Group Therapy is a semi-structured skills based group aimed at working with people who are experiencing self- criticism and experiencing anxiety and/or depression. Developing new skills aimed at reducing self-criticism and normalising our experiences with difficult emotions through the use of compassionate mind training.
What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Often, when we experience a situation that is very traumatic we have a range of symptoms referred to as PTSD. There are many symptoms including nightmares or frightening thoughts, re-living a traumatic event, often termed ‘flashbacks’. We will often avoid reminders of the event and of talking about it. Irritability or outbursts of anger, hyper vigilance and alertness to possible danger are other symptoms. We might also have panic attacks and problems with concentration and memory.
We have a dedicated team to help people who are experiencing symptoms trauma or stress. Depending on your needs, we will recommend the best way to get the support you need.
WHAT IS ONLINE/VIDEO THERAPY?
Our online therapy service allows us to offer help and support to people not able to access our York-based service face-to-face. Online therapy is a developing area for counselling and psychotherapy, and is also known as webcam counselling, e-therapy, web therapy, internet therapy, video therapy and distance therapy. This service allows you all the benefits of face-to-face sessions with a therapist, via your personal computer and from the comfort of your home.

They can help you with your current difficulties, past experiences or anxieties about your future with the aim of helping you improve the quality of your life and relationships.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.
It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.
Some people with autism can live relatively independent lives, but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support.
Is the service confidential?
All our services are confidential, and our therapists and clinicians follow professional codes of conduct which include principles around confidentiality. This means we will not disclose information about you to a third party without your consent, unless we had significant concern for either your safety or the safety of someone else. We would make every attempt to discuss this with you if the situation arose.
WHAT IS ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a group of behavioural symptoms that include:
- Inattentiveness – most people with ADHD will have a short attention span and may be easily distracted.
- Hyperactivity – there is likely to be some restlessness, fidgeting or overactivity. This can also lead to difficulties in sleeping and increased anxiety.
- Impulsiveness – people with ADHD may do things without thought for the consequences, without very much reflection and without having a plan.
Some adults will have ADHD without it being diagnosed at a younger age. Those who are diagnosed at a young age are likely to continue to experience problems, though the symptoms might reduce.
